My friend Steve was in Kansas City right after Labor Day weekend for work, and he’s on a bit of a quest to see baseball games in as many major league cities as possible. I hadn’t been out to the K since the renovations last year, and I thought it would be great to check out the updates. We got a major assist from another friend, Chad King, who gave me a pair of his season tickets for the game – in the new Diamond Club area. Luckily for Steve and I, the drizzle that had been falling just about all afternoon, disappeared shortly before game time. We enjoyed dinner in the Diamond Club, and then made our way to our terrific seats. Even better, we were treated to an excellent game – Robinson Tejada pitched great, we saw the Royals play some good defense, run the bases aggressively, and even get some timely hitting against the Tigers’ ace pitcher. I think this was the first Royals victory I’ve attended in person in close to a decade!
Oh – and the updates to the park are beautiful. I like the retired numbers on the wall out in left field. The Diamond Club/restaurant area was very cool. The new video screen is gorgeous (though I was feeling a little nostalgic for the old lite-bright board with the cartoony graphics). I could, however, do without the silly games after what seemed like each inning. All in all, a fun evening – thanks Steve, for coming to visit and getting my butt out to a ballgame. And HUGE thanks to Chad for the awesome seats!
