This past Saturday, we attended a fundraiser for the Shawnee Mission North High School activity fund – a worthy cause, but not one we’d normally go out of our way to support. But this one was different – SM North was putting on Beauty & the Beast last weekend, and the fundraiser was a character dinner with the characters from the play (thanks for the heads up about this to Jenni Korn-Davis). We had a pasta dinner and dessert at the Sylvester Powell Community Center, followed by a visit from the actors in the play in full costume, include Belle and the Prince and Mrs. Pot and Cogsworth – the whole gang. I think Mikaela was in heaven when, after dessert, she got to dance with the Prince while wearing her Belle-dress.
And, of course, as soon as Jonathan heard that Mikaela was “dressing up” for the character dinner, he insisted on dressing up too. As Mikaela went to put on her Belle dress, Jonathan announced, “I put on my suit!” And so he did. He wore his suit complete with his new dinosaur tie (a Chanukah present) and dinosaur shoes (a birthday present). And he enjoyed the dinner, right up until the costumed characters came out. Then, he suddenly felt the need to be picked up and to bury his head in my chest. It’s a good thing that we had only planned on Miriam and Mikaela staying to see the play.
