We were back at the emergency room at Children’s Mercy on Wednesday night/Thursday morning. Mikaela had croup again. She’d had a bit of a cold for a few days, but nothing indicating that this was coming. She required two breathing treatments and a steroid injection, so they kept her overnight Wednesday night. We were cleared to take her home by Thursday afternoon, and she seems to be doing fine now. All indications are that she simply has a congenitally narrow airway (probably inherited from her Daddy – I had croup several times when I was a child), and will be susceptible to croup until she outgrows it.
We’ll be meeting with the head of ENT at Children’s Mercy in the next couple of weeks. The doctors think it may be worthwhile to try and see if there’s any sort of impediment in Mikaela’s airway aside from just narrowness (they’re primarily concerned about lesions or scar tissue). We’ll pow-wow with the ENT doc and the cardiac surgeons who are scheduled to do her cardiac surgery this coming October and figure out a plan. The important thing is that right now Mikaela is essentially healthy and doing fine – though Mommy and Daddy are still pretty tired from the long night/day at the hospital.
