Mikaela has started a new activity - she’s playing basketball at the Jewish Community Center on Sundays. She’s working hard on developing her basketball skills. She’s especially proud of being able to dribble and run fast (we’re working on the “in control” part), and has good natural defense instincts, shuffling her feet and keeping her hands up. In addition to her games on Sunday, she like to go to open gym at the JCC to practice her shooting. Mikaela has even agreed to watch some KU basketball with me, so I can show her how it’s supposed to be done
Watching prekindergarteners play basketball does take some getting used to - you have to remember that many of the kids don’t really know or understand some of the basic rules of the game. Dribbling happens only occasionally (at least with the basketball). The players all seem to move in a pack. And they seem somewhat surprised when informed that they shouldn’t try to steal the ball from players wearing the same color jersey that they’re wearing.
