Labor Day started off nice and relaxing. We chilled out at home, watching movies, until it was time to head over to our friends’ the Rooks’ for an afternoon/evening of swimming and BBQing. Mikaela had a blast in the pool, showing off the swimming skills that she developed by spending virtually every day in the pool at the JCC over the last three months. Even Jonathan enjoyed splashing around in the pool.
Miriam headed home early with a sore back, but the kids and I stayed and played. Then came the not-so-fun. A little later in the evening, her back feeling better, Miriam decided to do some cleaning in the dining room. A glass hurricane shade in a sconce on the wall shattered in her hand. Luckily, our neighbor and cousin Julie Altman was home, and took Miriam to the ER. They called me on my cell phone at the party on their way. Several hours of creative juggling of childcare, and an overly long and stressful stint in the ER at St. Luke’s South later, Miriam had six stitches in her pinkie and an appointment with a hand surgeon to evaluate what to do from there. HUGE thank yous to Julie Altman for taking Miriam to the ER and to Marcia Perkins for staying at the ER with Miriam so that I could get the kids home from the party (and clean up the glass in the dining room). Thanks most of all to Grandma Mouse, who will probably be coming from Montana to help out while Miriam heals!
