I guess we knew it would probably start happening sooner or later. Last night, Mikaela tried to lawyer us - and it was a pretty perceptive argument.
First, the backstory. When Miriam got to the CDC to pick up Mikaela, Mikaela decided that she wasn’t ready to leave. Miriam told Mikaela that if she didn’t put her coat on, there would be, “no TV today.” Instead of putting on her coat, Mikaela launched into a full tantrum.
Miriam and Mikaela got home a bit late, dinner was a bit late, and by the time we were cleaning off the table, it was starting to get dark. As we were getting up from the table, Mikaela looked out the window and ever so innocently noted that the sun was going down. She asked, “is today over?”
Initially, Miriam and I were smiling about how Mikaela’s sense of time was improving. Then, at the exact same moment, the light bulb went off in each of our heads. Mikaela was lawyering us. Miriam told her that she couldn’t watch TV today. But if today was over when the sun went down, then she could watch something. It was a nice try, but no TV last night.
