It’s official. The simple replacement of the carpet in the master bathroom with ceramic tile has become a full-blown bathroom remodel. The feature-creep started innocently enough. If we put new ceramic tile on the floor, then the tile in the shower and bathtub surround wouldn’t match. So we’d go ahead and do the shower and bathtub surround too. But when the contractor started taking apart the shower stall, a noxious odor became apparent - and he discovered LOADS of nasty black mold inside the shower door. Then, he discovered that the builders had only used the special, water-resistant, wallboard about half way up in the shower. The top half of the walls were just regular drywall - except it was now rotting away and riddled with mold. So it all had to come down completely.
So now, the shower is being rebuilt pretty much from scratch. We’ve got all of our tile picked out and purchased, including accent tiles. Grout color chosen and purchased. We made up our minds on the paint tonight (mostly - we still have to decide whether we want the glaze effect or now). Glaze or no, it means we can finally kiss the “Laura Ashley exploded in my bathroom” wallpaper goodbye. The contractor has volunteered to redo the countertop of the vanity with our chosen tile, so that it will go better with our new decor - but that has led to the likely addition of new sinks and faucets (on top of the new faucet for the tub and new showerhead and faucet).
Ah, the joys of bathroom remodelling. In the four years since the last one of these we did, I almost forgot how much fun it is.
