Mikaela had been chomping at the bit for the last three weeks, ever since she caught part of a promo for the special Blue’s Clues 10th Anniversary episode, in which Blue gets a little brother. “It hasn’t been on yet,” was a VERY difficult concept for a child raised with TiVo and DVDs. It FINALLY aired this past Monday night.
She wanted to watch it as soon as she got home from daycare, but it wasn’t going to be on until 7 p.m. She doesn’t really have much concept of clock time, so we explained the plan for the evening - after dinner, after her bath, and after she puts on her jammies, we’d make some popcorn and cuddle on the couch downstairs and watch it on the “Hello TV” (her name for the bigscreen, that used to play a startup tone when turned on) in the media room.
For the first time that I can recall, Mikaela turned down dessert after dinner. We got the table cleared and she announced that she was going upstairs to take her bath. Bath taken, jammies on. It’s only 6:15 p.m. She was nearly in tears when I explained that it still wasn’t on yet. So we went downstairs and watched the first part of Elmo’s Peter & the Wolf, which distracted her sufficiently that she barely noticed when Miriam came downstairs with the popcorn.
When I stopped Elmo’s Peter & the Wolf to start the Blue’s Clues special, Mikaela darned near hit her head on the ceiling bouncing on the couch - “Is it time? Is it time?!” Oh, and since I didn’t anticipate Nickelodeon playing commercials halfway through, I didn’t bother to wait to start playing the TiVo recording long enough to avoid them. So we also had to explain to Mikaela the concept of commercials last night. She was kind of mad at them. She just wanted to get back to Blue.
I think she’s seen it at least three times all the way through already. And I’m just waiting for her to start lobbying us to name the baby “Sprinkles” just like Blue’s baby brother.
