We had a fun weekend this past weekend. It helped that no one was sick in what seems like forever. Friday night we had a nice, quiet, Shabbat dinner at home and then cuddled on the couch watching Muppet Treasure Island. Saturday was a bit busier.Â
I spent the day, from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., getting to pretend I was a Supreme Court Justice. I judged for the UMKC School of Law Ellison Moot Court competition. I shared a panel with retired Jackson County Circuit Judge John Moran and current 8th Circuit Federal Magistrate John Maughmer. The students did a good job, which kept hearing four arguments on the same topics from getting tedious. While I was judging Moot Court arguments, Miriam and Mikaela were enjoying a bit of a spa day - bubble baths and pedicures - and a trip to the mall so Mikaela could shop for a birthday present for Daddy :) Later, Miriam and Mikaela came downtown to the Federal Courthouse to meet me and attend the reception that they hold at the end of the competition. After the reception, we went to dinner at one of Mikaela’s favorite places - Bo Ling’s on the Plaza, for Lo Mein.
Sunday, Miriam and I went to see C.S.A. at the Screenland with my friend Oscar from work. The movie is a sort of “what-if” documentary, wondering aloud what it would have been like if the South had won the Civil War. It was excellent satire, doing a great job of interweaving historical truths with the imagined future. And the Screenland was a great find too. It’s nicely rehabbed, renovated theater. It also has an events space that could play host to some really interesting parties. And Marcia P. enjoyed having a Mikaela afternoon for herself - though Steph did stop by to play too for a bit.
