While we were all home sick last week, Miriam and I noticed that Mikaela’s right eye appeared to be turning in a bit. It was hard to tell for sure, since Mikaela is quite fond of winking and making goofy faces. But this didn’t really appear to be on purpose. Our friend Dana Thompson (the Mayo Clinic ENT who finally figured out Mikaela’s throat problem) recommended that we take Mikaela to see Dr. Trudy Grin. We got VERY lucky, and Dr. Grin had a cancellation that opened up an appointment this past Monday morning. Miriam took Mikaela to the appointment, and was VERY impressed with Dr. Grin.
Dr. Grin diagnosed Mikaela with “accommodative esotropia” - essentially, lazy eye. But she also said that we’d caught it early, and that as a result she believed that it could be corrected with glasses and we wouldn’t need patches or surgery. She’s also a bit farsighted, but that is likely also an effect of the esotropia. Mikaela got two pairs of glasses - the ones in the picture are her favorite. They’re her “red princess” glasses. She’s been mostly very good about wearing them, though we do battle over her wanting to look over the top of the glasses instead of through them. That should become less of an issue as she gets used to them.
