After all of the fun and excitement of last night, I settled in and enjoyed my TiVoed recording of KU shellacking Mizzou while Miriam and Mikaela headed to bed. So I’d only been asleep for a few hours when Miriam and I were awakened by that familiar barking cough and wheezy strider. I glanced at the bedside clock. 4:44 a.m. We tried the suggestion of the latest research on this conveniently frigid night, and bundled Mikaela up and took her outside to see if the cold air would soothe her swollen throat. No luck. So we headed to the St. Luke’s South ER. They got Mikaela checked in quickly and immediately confirmed our amateur diagnosis - croup. A saline breathing treatment and an unhappy shot in the bottom of decadron and the strider and bark disappeared. We’re told it’s almost certainly a virus. She sounds much better today, having spent most of the morning watching The Muppet Show on DVD. We finally got her down for a nap after lunch, allowing Miriam and I some much needed rest.
