We’ve been talking about getting a dog since we moved into the new house with a nice, fenced, backyard some ten months ago. This month, we decided it was time. Mikaela agreed that she would like to have a “sister dog,” so we drove out to Wayside Waifs to see about adopting a shelter dog. With the help of the Wayside Waifs staff, we picked out Spike.
Spike is a pointer mix and was a street stray when she was rescued by Wayside Waifs. She’s about 2 1/2 years old, so she’s full grown and already has outgrown the puppy stage. She had a touch of heartworm when we first met her at the shelter, but Wayside Waifs provided the heartworm treatment before we brought her home. She has a wonderfully friendly and cuddly personality. She’s about 24″ tall, just big enough to rest her chin next to you on the sofa to let you know she’d like to be scritched behind the ears. She’ll probably be more energetic in a few weeks, when she’s fully recovered from the heartworm treatment. But she’s been perfectly behaved since we got her home. She’s had one, small, accident in the house, but she’s been otherwise completely house trained.
Mikaela named Spike. It took us about a week to figure out why she insisted on Spike (even after brainstorming other names - which included her suggestion that we consider calling her “Melt”). Then it hit us. Spike was the name of the dog that lived on the corner up the street from us in our old neighborhood. Mikaela used to look for Spike there when we went for walks, so she could pet him through the fence. Mikaela named her new “sister dog” in homage to her old buddy Spike
